Gauntlet

The three-headed Chimera dwells in the keep of the Castle Stronghold as the castle's guardian. He is one of the bosses in Gauntlet: Legends and Dark Legacy.

The Chimera is the keeper of the second key (shard in non-arcade ports) in Legends. Although in Dark Legacy, he is the keeper of the third shard.

Physical Description[]

The beast has a lion body with huge bat-like dragon wings, and has raven claws in place of paws. He has three heads: the right head of an acid-breathing snake, the middle head of a fire-breathing lion, and the left head of a lightning-breathing raven.

Attacks[]

Each head possesses the same attack, but each use their own element in doing so.

  • Elemental Bolt: A head launches a bolt of their chosen element.
  • Elemental Breath: The head fires a breath weapon, which damages and causes knockdown, much like that of a Gargoyle.
  • Triple Bolt: All three heads launch a simultaneous bolt.
  • Triple Breath: All three heads breath at once.

Battle[]

The battle does not initiate until a hero has walked up the stairs. The Chimera's platform then descends to the level of the hero, then the battle initiates. If the hero has found the Scimitar, the weapon will activate and be thrown at the Chimera. Depending on the distance, it will either hit the lion head, cutting it off, or (if you're standing right next to it) hit the chest removing 1/3 the boss's HP.

When the Chimera is defeated, the now-headless beast will stand on its hind legs and stumbling in backwards, ending up falling off the tower to his death.

Strategy[]

The easiest way (although not the cheapest) for a character with high magic stat was to buy a reflect shield or two and stand in the middle of the screen, roughly behind the center block's former location once it is destroyed. The Chimera's heads would fire their appropriate ball weapon, which would get reflected back to the heads, causing massive damage.

Trivia[]

Chimera Boss
  • Chimera is the only boss in Legends and Dark Legacy to have a unique health bar. The boss has three health bars, one for each heads: Blue health gauge for the raven head, red health gauge for the lion head, and green health gauge for the snake head.
    • In the PlayStation port for Legends, however, the Chimera has only one health gauge.
  • In early GameCube versions of Dark Legacy, the Scimitar of Rasha is completely useless, as it does not cut off the lion's head but simply floats in the air.
  • In the PlayStation version of Legends, all three heads of the Chimera only shoots out fire balls, and lacks the acid and lightning breath attack. Upon death, the Chimera reuses the Dragon's death sound and simply collapsed to the floor instead of falling off the tower.
  • Gargoyles are close relatives to the Chimera.[1]
